12/04/2007Bulgaria to extradite human trafficking suspects

SOFIA, April 12, 2007 (AFP) - Five Bulgarian men facing charges of human trafficking in France will be handed over to the French judicial authorities, a regional court ruled Thursday.

The five men, aged between 24 and 37, were arrested on a European Union warrant in the Black Sea city of Varna on March 27, following a joint police operation by Bulgarian and French police.

The French authorities requested their extradition on charges of women trafficking and procuring, the Varna court said in a statement.

The five men were allegedly part of an organised crime group involved in trafficking Bulgarian women to France, mainly to the city of Lyon, and forcing them to work as prostitutes.

They face between seven and 20 years in prison but will most probably be sent back to serve their sentences in Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, a court of appeal in the central city of Plovdiv issued an arrest warrant for another Bulgarian man wanted by the judicial authorities in Marseille on charges of human trafficiking and procuring more than 100 Bulgarian girls, BTA agency reported.
