The Luxembourg tourist office in London has provided an essential guide to getting around the Grand Duchy by public transport.Luxembourg City
The City of Luxembourg is served by an efficient network of buses run by the Autobus municipaux de la Ville de Luxembourg. The main centre of the capital city is very compact and eminently walkable, in spite of the cliffs and ramparts which so characterise the old fortress city. There is no underground or tram netweork, but there are plans to improve on the existing link from the airport to the railway station.
Unless you show a pass, a ride on a City bus will set you back a flat fare of EUR 1.50 (around GBP 1.20). This billet courte-durée ('short time ticket') is valid for two hours from first use on the whole of Luxembourg's public transport network, and also allows changes between city and country buses and trains.
A block of 10 such tickets can be purchased for EUR 12, giving 20 percent off the regular tarif. Since there is no date on the tickets when they are bought; passengers must stick the ticket into the machines on buses and train platforms when they first use the ticket, to get the time of first use printed on the ticket.
You can order the 'Nightrider' nightbus (or www.nightrider.lu) to pick you up and drop you off anywhere in Luxembourg City, like a taxi (except that you may be sharing the journey with others). This service operates every night between 18.00 and 05.00. Order the bus by phoning (freephone) 8002 1010 at least 20 minutes before your intended departure. Costs for this service are EUR 18 for a return journey, Monday to Thursday (pink tarif) and EUR 24 return, Saturday to Sunday (black tarif). This service understandably gets rather busy, so early booking is recommended.
Further details can be found online on all City bus services or telephone (+352 4796 2975).
Dogs and bicycles are allowed to travel free of charge on Luxembourg's trains and buses, provided there is space. Passengers with bikes will have to carry them on and off vehicles without assistance.
The Luxembourger is justly proud of the geographical variety of his small country. From the capital, you are no more than an hour away from anywhere in Luxembourg. Don't miss out on visiting the Ardennes hills and forests, the wine-making valley of the Moselle or the lovely 'Little Switzerland' (also known as Müllerthal) and the 'Minette' (the Land of the Red Earth).
National tickets
A Billet réseau ('network ticket' or, perhaps better called 'day ticket') is available at railway stations throughout the country and at the airport. It covers unlimited travel on all forms of public transport (city buses, trains and country coaches) for one day (until 08.00 the next morning) throughout the country. It is not valid on sightseeing buses.
You can purchase a single ticket for EUR 4.00 (about GBP 3.20) or a block of five such tickets for the cost of four single issue tickets (EUR 16.00).
You may use the 'day pass' ticket in first class accommodation (available on trains, but not buses), by paying a supplement of EUR 2.50, payable at railway stations and on the trains themselves.
A weekend ticket costing EUR 6 might be good value for small groups. This ticket covers up to five people (who need not be family) for unlimited travel on Luxembourg's public transport network for one weekend day (either Saturday or Sunday) until 03.00 the next day. Note that these tickets are not sold in blocks of 10, and are only valid in second class.
Other types of network tickets include monthly tickets (EUR 45).
People over 65 years of age and mini-groups (e.g., large families) can benefit from a reduction of 50 percent. You'll need to prove your age, e.g., with your passport.
It is also worth investigating the LuxembourgCard which includes free transport and in addition gives you free entry to 50 attractions thoughout the country for EUR 10 a day for a single user or EUR 20 a day for groups of up to five people.
Train and bus timetables
See www.cfl.lu for national train timetables and www.horaires.lu for national bus timetables (only available in French/German). Alternatively, www.mobiliteit.lu gives an English-language interface to all public transport in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg trains run to the 'Horaire Cadencé' schedule, meaning that there is at least one train every hour to every station at the same time of every hour between 08.00 and 20.00.
The information service of CFL (Luxembourg National Railways) also gives country bus information, and can be contacted by telephone (+352 4990 4990 or +352 4990 5572) every day from 06.00 to 20.00 and by fax (+ 352 49 35 32).
Neighbouring national railways
Deutsche Bahn (German Railways, www.bahn.de) offers an email service with timetables from all German stations (and many Belgian and French stations too) to Luxembourg.
Aslo useful is the Belgian Railways website and the equivalent French service at www.sncf.fr.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Today at around 14.20 I stood at the bus stop Fondation Pescatore in Luxembourg City. I needed to take a bus one stop until Philarmonie. So I took bus No 142, knowing that it stops also in front of Philarmonie. There were 2 other persons in the bus and the driver. When I pressed the STOP button I could see that the bus driver did not have a positive reaction. However I did not expect that he only stoped at Auchan bus station, granting me an "exceptional" favour. When I expressely told him that I want to get out at the next stop after Philarmonie, he said that "normally" he should bring me to the village of his destination. Although he had 2-3 bus stops between Philarmonie and Auchan, he showed no willingness to stop. So, I just wanted to "congratulate" you for the most stupid bus driver I ever met. "Thanks" for this client-oriented service!! G.P.
