A new set of music festivals opens around Europe in July; from the Proms in London to the Wagnerian saga in Bayreuth Bavaria and a modern jazz gathering on the coast in Portugal.

AUSTRIA

PHOTOGRAPHY: At Vienna's Kunst Haus, Tina Modotti - Photographer and revolutionary runs from 1 July to 7 November. The Italian, who died in Mexico in 1942, is best-known for her striking pictures of the Central American country during the 1920s. On her travels she met and photographed painters Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and photographer Edward Weston, whose portraits are included in the retrospective.

DANCE: Impulstanz dance festival in Vienna mixes shows with workshops, with teachers from around the world in the Austrian capital between 15 July and 15 August, to give lessons on dancing styles. Everything from hip-hop to Bollywood-style dancing is on the programme. Among performers at different theatres around the city are Les Ballets de Monte Carlo and dance company Ultima Vez from Belgium.

ART: Flowers for Kim Il-Sung at Vienna's Museum of Applied Arts offers a unique insight into the contemporary art, poster production and architecture of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. This controversial show gathers some hundred pictures and posters rarely on display in international exhibitions. Running from 19 May to 5 September.
