PHOTOGRAPHY: At Vienna's Kunst Haus, Tina Modotti - Photographer and revolutionary runs from 1 July to 7 November. The Italian, who died in Mexico in 1942, is best-known for her striking pictures of the Central American country during the 1920s. On her travels she met and photographed painters Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and photographer Edward Weston, whose portraits are included in the retrospective.

DANCE: Impulstanz dance festival in Vienna mixes shows with workshops, with teachers from around the world in the Austrian capital between 15 July and 15 August, to give lessons on dancing styles. Everything from hip-hop to Bollywood-style dancing is on the programme. Among performers at different theatres around the city are Les Ballets de Monte Carlo and dance company Ultima Vez from Belgium.

ART: Flowers for Kim Il-Sung at Vienna's Museum of Applied Arts offers a unique insight into the contemporary art, poster production and architecture of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. ART/PHOTOGRAPHY: Installations, photographs and stories from French artist Sophie Calle, whose "Take Care of Yourself" was one of the highlights of the 2007 Venice Biennale. The exhibition runs from 23 June to 24 October at the Museum of Modern Art in Louisiana, just outside Copenhagen.

THEATRE/FESTIVAL: The 64th edition of the major Avignon theatre festival focuses on music and choreography this year. The two artists-in-residence are theatre director Christoph Marhaler and, for the first time, a writer, Olivier Cadiot. The festival runs from 7-27 July while in the ever-growing "Off" Avignon, 1,100 performances from nearly 900 companies in 123 locations take place from 8-13 July.

MUSIC: From 1-21 July the 62nd edition of this music festival in Aix-en-Provence puts on five productions including Mozart's Don Giovanni directed by Russian sensation Dmitri Tcherniakov.

ART: The Kunsthalle in Bonn hosts an exhibition by German sculptor Thomas Schutte, Golden Lion winner at the Venice Biennale in 2005. His reduced-size models are on display alongside two architectural models and shown for the first time to the public. From 15 July to 1 November.

DANCE: London is the location for "the biggest street dance festival in the world", with some 600 events organised under the aegis of the English National Ballet and Sadler's Wells theatre. Big Dance 2010 runs from 3-11 July.

ART: The Royal Academy in London dedicates an exhibition to John Singer, Sargent and the Sea, from 10 July to 26 September. Singer, best-known for his portraits of glamorous society, was also passionate about the sea. Some 80 paintings, drawings and watercolours depicting scenes from his journeys to Brittany, Normandy and Capri, as well as his voyage to Morocco are all on display.

ART: To mark the Portuguese painter Nadir Afonso's 90th birthday, Sem limites (Without limits) in Chiado Museum in Lisbon gathers together some hundred works retracing the early years in Afonso's career from 1930 to 1960. Best-known for his geometric landscapes, Afonso was also an architect and collaborated with Le Corbusier in France and Oscar Niemeyer in Brazil. Runs till 3 October.

RUSSIA
ART / ENVIRONMENT: For five years, locals in the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow, have been collaborating with artists to make snow-based creations, and works made out of hay and trees. Their results will be displayed in woods and fields around the village of Nikola-Lenivets, for the Archstoyanie land-art festival on 24-25 July.

MUSIC: Switzerland's jazz festival in Montreux from 2-17 July brings together music stars including Phil Collins, Norah Jones, Roxy Music, Ben Harper, Vanessa Paradis, Keith Jarreth, Jessye Norman, Quincy Jones and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Hundreds of concerts are planned, most with free entry.
