In the latest instalment of Paradise (Apparently), Flo describes the challenges and occasional clashes that come with being a bilingual family.
I didn’t react, but Harold leapt onto the sofa and shouted, “Dante has started talking, did you hear? He said his first word! Can you believe it? Dante can talk! He can talk! He said ‘cu’!”

One correction: not EVERYONE speaks English in Holland. go into the dorps and you will find many who do not understand English nor want to. The younger people do, of course, but let's not confuse those who might be going to the Netherlands expecting only English. I lived their for ten years, went to college to learn Dutch, and only in the bigger cities, and with the younger people did I find someone to speak English with. Yes, it is a very difficult language, but once learned, one can get around Holland quite nicely. My Dutch husband and I interact in both languages, and now living in California, still use both languages. The dog is spoken to only in Dutch, a choice of my husband's. :)
There are a lot of us out here who find the Dutch language neither ugly nor difficult!
I too married a Dutch man and learned Dutch to be able to speak with relatives who spoke either very little English or none at all. The grammar is far easier than German, for example, and I love the way it sounds.
Our kids are trilingual and are equally proud of both of their "mother tongues" as well as the German language they picked up later.
